There’s something undeniably comforting about a homemade sausage roll, fresh from the oven, golden and flaky with savory sausage nestled inside. The irresistible aroma of puff pastry baking, paired with seasoned sausage, fills your home and creates an atmosphere of warmth and satisfaction.
Sausage rolls are a timeless favorite in many parts of the world. They combine the best of both worlds: the richness of buttery puff pastry and the hearty, flavorful taste of sausage. These delicious pastries can effortlessly transition from casual snacks at a weekend gathering to being part of a festive spread at a holiday brunch or party. Their versatility lies in how easily they can be customized to suit any palate, whether you prefer mild breakfast sausages, spicy chorizo, or savory Italian sausage links. The simple combination of a few key ingredients—puff pastry, sausage meat, and a few seasonings—creates a dish that’s both easy to prepare and always a crowd-pleaser.
What makes homemade sausage rolls even more appealing is how quick and easy they are to make. With a little time and a handful of ingredients, you can prepare a batch in under an hour. Plus, they’re incredibly versatile. You can enhance the flavor of the sausage filling by adding fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme, a sprinkle of chili flakes for some heat, or even grated cheese for added richness. This flexibility makes sausage rolls a go-to for a wide variety of occasions, from casual weeknight snacks to impressing guests at a party.
Ingredients:
1 pound (450g) store-bought puff pastry, thawed if frozen.
1 pound (450g) sausage meat (remove casings if necessary)
Salt and pepper, to taste.
Optional seasonings: Fresh or dried herbs (e.g., rosemary, thyme, sage), chili flakes, or grated cheese.
1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon of water or milk (for egg wash)
Flour, for dusting.
Instructions:
Step 1
Heat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2
Lightly dust your work surface with flour.
Step 3
Roll out the puff pastry to about ⅛ inch (3mm) thick. Cut it into long strips, approximately 4–5 inches wide (10–13 cm).
Step 4
In a bowl, combine the sausage meat with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings like chili flakes, herbs, or grated cheese.
Step 5
Form the seasoned sausage into a log shape that fits along the length of the pastry strips, around 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.
Step 6
Place the sausage log along the strip of pastry and wrap it up, sealing the edges by pressing gently along the seam. Trim any excess pastry.
Step 7
Cut the sausage roll into pieces, around 2 inches (5 cm) in length for smaller portions.
Step 8
Place the rolls seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg wash.
Step 9
Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden, and the sausage is fully cooked.
