The Sweet Tradition of the Southern “Church Cake”

Step-by-Step Instructions

For a flawless presentation, assemble this dessert directly in a 9×13-inch glass or ceramic baking dish.

1-Bake the Base
Takes 30 min

Preheat your oven according to the instructions on your cake mix box. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Prepare the cake batter as directed, pour it into the pan, and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

2-Poke the Holes
Takes 5 min

Allow the cake to cool for about 10 to 15 minutes, but do not let it cool completely. Using the round handle of a wooden spoon (or a large straw), poke holes evenly across the entire surface of the warm cake, spacing them about an inch apart. Make sure you press about halfway down into the cake.

3-Whisk and Pour the Pudding
Takes 5 min

In a large bowl, whisk together the two packages of instant vanilla pudding mix and the 4 cups of cold milk for about 2 minutes until it is thoroughly combined but still completely liquid. Immediately pour the liquid pudding over the warm cake, using a spatula to gently guide it into all the holes. The cake will absorb the pudding as it sits.

4-Chill and Top
Takes 4 hours

Place the cake into the refrigerator for at least 2 to 3 hours to allow the pudding to set completely and chill the cake through. Once cold, spread the thawed whipped topping evenly across the surface, creating beautiful swoops and swirls with your spatula just like the classic look .

The Golden Rule of Church Cake: Keep it cold! Because of the milk and pudding layers, this cake needs to be stored in the refrigerator right up until the moment you slice and serve it. If you are traveling to a picnic, pack it next to an ice pack to keep the layers pristine.

Popular Flavor Swaps

Once you have mastered the classic vanilla and yellow cake version, you can adapt the flavor profile to match any season or theme:

  • The Chocolate-Lover’s Dream: Use a devil’s food cake mix combined with instant chocolate fudge pudding, topped with mini chocolate chips.

  • The Summer Berry Twist: Use a white cake mix paired with white chocolate pudding, and scatter fresh sliced strawberries and blueberries across the whipped topping layer.

  • The Tropical Route: Use a yellow cake mix with instant banana cream pudding, layering sliced fresh bananas along the top before spreading the whipped topping
