Amish Baked Custard

Instructions:

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

Step 2

In a large glass or metal bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk and hot water.

Step 3

In another bowl, whisk the eggs until they become light in color and frothy to the touch.

Step 4

Gradually pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the eggs while continuously whisking to temper the eggs.

Step 5

Once tempered, pour the egg mixture into the remaining milk mixture and whisk until smooth.

Step 6

Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.

Step 7

Pour the custard mixture into individual ramekins or a 2-quart baking dish.

Step 8

Place the filled ramekins or baking dish on a high-sided baking sheet to create a water bath.

Step 9

Carefully transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

Step 10

Once baked, remove the custard from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature before chilling it in the refrigerator.

Step 11

Before serving, sprinkle the chilled custard with a dusting of nutmeg for an extra touch of flavor.

Step 12

Enjoy your delightful Amish Baked Custard!
