Instructions
1. Prepare the Puff Pastry
-
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
-
Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the puff pastry sheets on top.
-
Prick the pastry all over with a fork to prevent excessive puffing.
-
Cover with another tray to keep the layers flat while baking.
-
Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden and crisp.
-
Let cool completely, then trim the edges if needed to fit your dish.
2. Make the Custard Filling
-
In a saucepan, heat the milk until it begins to simmer—do not boil.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks until smooth.
-
Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
-
Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring continuously, until thickened (5–7 minutes).
-
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until fully incorporated.
-
Allow the custard to cool, then refrigerate until chilled.
3. Assemble the Slice
-
Place one puff pastry sheet in a rectangular dish or tray.
-
Spread the chilled custard evenly over the pastry.
-
Top with the second pastry sheet, pressing lightly to secure.
-
Chill for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to set.
4. Serve
-
Dust the top generously with powdered sugar.
-
Use a serrated knife to cut into neat squares or slices.
-
Serve chilled and enjoy the creamy, flaky layers!
