Custard Puff Pastry Slice

Instructions

1. Prepare the Puff Pastry

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the puff pastry sheets on top.

  3. Prick the pastry all over with a fork to prevent excessive puffing.

  4. Cover with another tray to keep the layers flat while baking.

  5. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden and crisp.

  6. Let cool completely, then trim the edges if needed to fit your dish.

2. Make the Custard Filling

  1. In a saucepan, heat the milk until it begins to simmer—do not boil.

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks until smooth.

  3. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.

  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring continuously, until thickened (5–7 minutes).

  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until fully incorporated.

  6. Allow the custard to cool, then refrigerate until chilled.

3. Assemble the Slice

  1. Place one puff pastry sheet in a rectangular dish or tray.

  2. Spread the chilled custard evenly over the pastry.

  3. Top with the second pastry sheet, pressing lightly to secure.

  4. Chill for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to set.

4. Serve

  • Dust the top generously with powdered sugar.

  • Use a serrated knife to cut into neat squares or slices.

  • Serve chilled and enjoy the creamy, flaky layers!
