In today’s world, your smartphone rarely leaves your side. But firefighters say many people overlook a serious safety issue: where and how they charge and store their devices. From overheating fires to electrical shocks, certain habits dramatically increase the risk of accidents.
Here are two of the most dangerous places to keep your phone — and what to do instead.
🔥 1. Under Your Pillow or Blanket
One of the most common — and most dangerous — habits is charging your phone under your pillow or blanket.
In one alarming case reported by FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, a 13-year-old girl in Texas woke up to a smoldering Samsung phone under her pillow. The device had overheated with nowhere for the heat to escape.
Why this is risky:
-
Phones generate heat while charging.
-
Pillows and blankets trap that heat.
-
Fabric is flammable.
-
Overnight charging means you may not notice rising temperatures.
Modern smartphones contain lithium-ion batteries, which can become dangerous if they overheat, are damaged, or are charged improperly.
Safer alternative:
Place your phone on a hard, flat, non-flammable surface like a nightstand or desk — ideally in a well-ventilated area.
💧 2. Near Water (Bathroom, Kitchen Sink, Bathtub)
Water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
Charging your phone near sinks, bathtubs, kitchen counters, or any water source increases the risk of:
-
Short circuits
-
Electric shock
-
Device damage
-
Fire hazards
Even a small splash or condensation buildup can cause serious electrical issues — especially if the phone is plugged in.
Safer alternative:
Keep your phone and charger at least several feet away from water sources. Avoid using charging cables in bathrooms altogether.
