My German Nana’s Comfort Dish: Cabbage & Dumplings

👩‍🍳 How to Make It

Step 1: Sauté the Cabbage

  • In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat.

  • Add chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

  • Stir in the chopped cabbage, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and flavorful.

Step 2: Make the Dumpling Batter

  • In one bowl, whisk together the flour and ½ teaspoon salt.

  • In another bowl, beat the eggs and milk.

  • Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry, mixing until a thick, sticky batter forms.

Step 3: Cook the Dumplings

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a gentle boil.

  • Using two spoons, scoop and drop small portions of the dumpling batter into the water.

  • Cook for 3–5 minutes or until the dumplings float and are firm to the touch.

  • Remove dumplings with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Step 4: Combine & Serve

  • Gently fold the cooked dumplings into the cabbage mixture.

  • Adjust seasoning to taste.

  • Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve hot.
