It often begins with a small, unexpected detail—you look at your hands and notice faint lines running from the base to the tip of your fingernails. For many people, these vertical ridges become more noticeable with age, sparking curiosity or mild concern. In most cases, however, they’re simply a normal part of aging. As the body changes over time, nail growth slows slightly and cell renewal becomes less efficient, which can affect the nail’s surface texture. The result is subtle lengthwise ridges that are typically harmless and purely cosmetic.
Daily habits can also influence the appearance of your nails. Frequent handwashing, exposure to cold or dry air, and contact with harsh cleaning products can strip away natural moisture, leaving nails drier and more textured. Nails may also reflect your overall nutritional status. Nutrients such as biotin, iron, and zinc play an important role in nail strength and formation, and deficiencies can sometimes show up as changes in the nails, hair, or skin. Hydration is equally important—when the body lacks sufficient water, nails may become brittle or develop more visible ridging.
