A skin specialist recently shared insight into what ridges on your fingernails could mean—and when it’s important to seek medical advice. Dr. Ross Perry, a dermatologist at Cosmedics, explains that these ridges may sometimes signal health issues, ranging from dehydration and poor nutrition to certain skin conditions.
Dr. Perry notes that nutritional deficiencies are a common cause. “A lack of Vitamin A, or low levels of protein or calcium, can lead to ridges forming on your nails,” he says. “In more severe cases, iron deficiency may also trigger noticeable changes, including ridges.”
However, not every ridge is cause for concern. Most nail changes are harmless. Everyday habits, such as picking at your nails, can make ridges more pronounced. The NHS also highlights that nail problems—like brittleness, looseness, or discoloration—rarely indicate serious health issues.
When to be concerned
One exception is when ridges are deep or severe. Dr. Perry warns that unusually pronounced ridges could signal serious conditions, such as kidney disease, and should prompt a visit to a doctor. Diseases like diabetes may also cause similar changes, making it important to pay attention to these warning signs.
